Shortly, the First Christian Church of Newport will be “in transition,” as they say. Derek Helt, the church’s pastor of nearly 15 years, is leaving the congregation. He’s not been fired; neither is he quitting under anything less than the best of circumstance. No, Derek and his wife, Pam, are moving to Cambodia in 2014 to serve as staff pastors for Agape International Missions, an organization that is on the front lines of the war against child sex trafficking in SE Asia.
You can learn more about the work in Cambodia and the Helts’ future plans at their web site, “Living On The Far Side.”
The church is already making plans for the process of choosing their next pastor. Please keep checking back to this site, as well as the church’s Facebook page, for updates as this process unfolds.
… if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
