We started a new sermon series last Sunday: God’s At War. Most of us would say that, of all the Ten Commandments, we’re safest when talking about the second, the command to not make an idol for yourself to worship. We’re pretty sure that we’ve never broken that one. Idolatry is not a problem for us.
However, even though bowing down to our personalized version of a golden calf is almost certainly out of the question, there is still a war going on within us — a daily battle being fought for our devotion, adoration & worship.
In Joshua 24, Israel’s leader challenged the people of God to choose which god they would worship: one of the assorted gods their ancestors and enemies bowed down to, or the Lord God. We face the same choice, believe it or not.
